The congregation of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in West Palm Beach, Florida is helping their community by growing a garden to address the growing concern of food insecurity. According to WFLX, the community garden started in 2018, but with soaring inflation many people are having difficulty putting food on the table and the church is now producing more to meet the increased need. With feeding families in need as their priority, the church community is offering some relief to families by lessening the burden of worrying about going hungry.

Tending to the garden throughout the week, Dr. Florenzia Davis, who has a Ph.D. in nutritional science according to WFLX, shared that she has a “passion for helping people and watching things grow,” and using nature to provide food. Davis explained that the church harvests the vegetables on Saturday and packages them to put out on tables on Sunday mornings for anyone to take what they need.

To help improve the garden, the church has partnered with Keller Williams Realty of the Palm Beaches. For their community service day, called their ‘Red Day,’ Keller Williams chose to help Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church to work on and clean up the garden. Renee Goodernote from Keller Williams Realty of the Palm Beach shared that the mission resonated with them and they knew that helping the church fix up their garden on this day would make a long-term impact as the garden continues to be harvested.

Davis shared that partnering with Keller Williams has given the church a great opportunity to provide more for their community by being able to grow more. She noted that as more and more families are needing to make choices between paying rent, buying food, or buying medicine, this community garden relieves some of their anxiety needing to make that choice by providing for at least one of their needs. The congregation and volunteers working together to grow a garden and share the harvest with their community members in need are showing just how far a compassionate effort can go making a difference in the lives of others.
