Former Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, has either revealed just how little she knows about the United States justice system, or her intentions to follow the model of oppressive governments. According to Newsweek, Pelosi tweeted that former President Donald Trump, who was indicted Thursday, has “the right to a trial to prove innocence,” adding she hopes he “respects the system, which grants him that right.”
Context was added and a correction was issued on Twitter stating, “Pelosi mistakenly says that Trump can prove his innocence at trial. Law in the US assumes the innocence of a defendant and the prosecution must prove guilt for a conviction.”
Many Americans were quick to remind Pelosi that we live in America, not her socialist dreamland.
Republican Senator Josh Hawley replied, “the right to ‘prove innocence’? This is America, not Stalinist Russia.”
Senator Ted Cruz attacked both Pelosi’s tweet and Trump’s indictment itself saying both were mockeries of the American justice system.
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich called Pelosi out for her “misreading of the American Constitution,” saying that “in totalitarian states you are guilty until proven innocent. In America you are innocent until proven guilty. She turned the American system upside down.”
Conservative radio host Mark Levin also shared everyone’s frustration. “Stalinist Pelosi. Prove innocent? It’s innocent until proven guilty, moron. Or at least it used to be.”
President Trump has also called Democrats out for taking extreme action against a political opponent after listing several of their attempts to stop him from leading America since before he took office. Pelosi was responding to the Democrats’ latest attempt to incriminate Trump with Thursday’s indictment.
The president of Judicial Watch, Tom Fitton, tweeted in response, “Pelosi confirms malicious political prosecution by suggesting Trump is guilty until proven innocent!”
At the time of this publication, Pelosi has yet to correct her tweet.
